Since this bur isn’t designed for finishing or fine contouring, offering it in finer grits would compromise its primary purpose. For finishing work, it’s best to follow up with a dedicated fine grit finishing bur or polisher tailored to the case.

How does the 885 compare to the 886 beveled cylinder?

While both the 885 and 886 share a beveled cylinder shape, their key difference lies in length and access.

In contrast, the 886 bur is longer, at 10.0mm as well as having medium and fine grits as well - which makes it more suitable for deep posterior crown preps, extended axial reductions and situations requiring greater vertical reach. If you're prepping a second molar or adjusting a longer clinical crown, the 886 gives you the access you need. But for everyday use in tight or delicate anatomy, the 885 provides an excellent balance of reach and maneuverability.

Can this bur be used for both anterior and posterior work?

Are these burs safe for use on porcelain or zirconia?

While the 885's coarse diamond coating handles enamel, dentin and composite beautifully, it's important to exercise caution with ultra hard ceramics like monolithic zirconia or feldspathic porcelain. 

Using a coarse grit on these materials can without care can cause microfractures or chipping, particularly near margins. For intraoral adjustments on zirconia or lithium disilicate, we recommend switching to zirconia specific burs or dedicated polishing systems that are designed for smoother abrasion with minimal structural compromise.

However, if you're removing a failed restoration or doing controlled reduction under water spray, the 885 can be used carefully - just avoid dry cutting or aggressive pressure.

Are they reusable and autoclavable?

Yes - like all Global Burs, the 885 series is manufactured with high grade stainless steel shanks and multi layer diamond coatings that are fully autoclavable up to 134°C. With proper handling, each bur delivers between 15 to 20 clinical uses. 

To extend lifespan, always:

  • Avoid excessive force during use
  • Rinse and clean immediately after use (especially if debris has hardened)
  • Use a dedicated bur block to protect the working end during sterilization
  • Ensure complete drying before autoclaving to prevent corrosion

When used with care, the 885 delivers consistent performance - from prep one to prep ten.
